Parliamentary Debate/World Schools Debate Resources (Middle School)
Parliamentary Debate is the largest and most popular debate format in the world as well as at the American collegiate level. Students learn more debate topics than any other debate format and unlike other debate formats - topics are determined by teachers and students. Unlike the year round study of policy debate, parliamentary emphasizes extemporaneous and impromptu debate skills with limited preparation times and having to "think on your feet." At this time the NYCUDL only offers parliamentary debate at the middle school level but we are hoping to expand to high school soon.
The New York City Urban Debate League uses a modified version of Parliamentary debate based on Worlds Schools Debate. Parliamentary Debate resources since a worldwide debate format can be found everywhere. We espeically recommend parliamentary debate resources from the National Speech and Debate Association (Worlds Schools Debate), Claremont Colleges Public Debate Program, University of Vermont, and other Urban Debate Leagues.
